An interesting beginning. You are a Shape-Changer stolen many years ago from your mother by the evil King Rancibrawn of Mirewater. Kept as a pet, you have been forced to use your abilities to change form for the amusement of your dwarven captives. But now, it’s time for escape and revenge. It's really an interesting character. The shape-shifting (changing) gives another dimension to the game. But author could do better about the shape-shifting. I've learned how to shift into the mouse and snake, but I've never used this ability to solve various tasks or escape danger. Moreover, author advises you to fight your enemies in a shifted form. But consider this. To learn how to mimic another creature, you have to kill it first. Generally, you are not able to defeat an opponent stronger than your character. And that's the heart of the matter. All creatures you can shift to are weaker than your character in the natural form, unless you are really lucky. This significantly reduces the potentials of the shape-shifting. This gamebook is a true Fighting Fantasy story - you just walk, fight, walk, fall into trap, walk, fight… I think you've got the sense. No explanation of the magic items you may buy, no use for the weapons. Your fighting skill does not improve along to your experiences. Too many fortunate and tiny details needed to successfully complete your quest. If you don't have just one of many items required, the story is finished. There is no other way to go. You die so many times that it's no fun to start playing again anymore. Graphic presentation is weak. Adventure sheet is OK. There is an accompanying background music, but better turn your speakers off, otherwise you get crazy in several minutes. But, nevertheless, I've found several good ideas and enjoyed the game. The gamebook is worth reading it. MIK |
