  • Chronicles of Arborell written and illustrated by Wayne Densley

The Chronicles of Arborell are a series of interactive fantasy gamebooks and associated stories of an epic adventure in the lands of Arborell. In the process you explore the rich history and lore of a world steeped in magic and conflict. The first book, Windhammer, stands ready for you. The second, Earth and Stone, is currently in development and should be available soon.

    Windhammer

Deep in the subterranean labyrinths of the ancient mountain fortress of Stoneholme stands a pillar of stonewood known to all the peoples of Arborell as the Tellandra. For more than a century it has been lost, hidden far from the sight of men by the minions of the Horde as they assail it in an effort to destroy its power. Now it lies shattered. Whole, the Tellandra is the most powerful conduit of magic in the known world. Broken, its power ebbs like blood from an open wound, dispersing unseen into the darkness of Stoneholme's deepest chambers. With each passing day the powers of Magic and Lore weaken. The Horde has returned and the worst nightmares of Men have come to reality.

This story is set in the northern frontier lands of Arborell, in the sparsely settled regions of Northern Kalborea. Your name is Halokim Vesh, member of the once great and proud nation of Dwarvendim, now under the enslavement of the Kalborean Union. Saved from the prison just to be forced to set out for a perilous quest to restore the Tellandra, you shall experience greatest adventure never seen before.

This is one of my most favorite gamebooks. The graphic presentation is truly astounding and the idea of Ather'Lorell is really great. In fact, the only reason to rate this gamebook with 4 and half stars only is my buck-passing. I want to keep an opportunity to rate even higher. More illustrations wold be nice.

    The Inquisitor's Lament

To be a Seeker of Truth can be a lonely and sometimes dangerous profession. For the Tak Malleus Lovar the responsibilities and traditions of the Guild are his life. That is until he finds reason to question their purpose. Upon the frontiers of the known world he uncovers a question that leads to a mystery and a deadly secret. • Forest of dreams written by Nathanael Page

An interesting beginning. You are a Shape-Changer stolen many years ago from your mother by the evil King Rancibrawn of Mirewater. Kept as a pet, you have been forced to use your abilities to change form for the amusement of your dwarven captives. But now, it's time for escape and revenge.

It's really an interesting character. The shape-shifting (changing) gives another dimension to the game. But author could do better about the shape-shifting. I've learned how to shift into the mouse and snake, but I've never used this ability to solve various tasks or escape danger. Read more>>

  • Lone Wolf written by Joe Dever

Joe Dever's most popular series of gamebooks, set in the mythical world of Magnamund. You, the reader, play as Lone Wolf, a warrior-monk whose potential as a hero emerges from the tragic defeat of his teachers and kinsmen, known as the Kai Lords. These are solo adventures that can be read and interpreted at your leisure, bringing a unique experience to the reader. The most similar books to these that found a mainstream audience are the Choose Your Own Adventure and Fighting Fantasy series. In Lone Wolf, however, you do not only make key decisions in the text, but also choose your equipment and unique abilities, which may help you to survive through encounters that have both strategic and random elements. Lone Wolf books are also relatively unique in that the books can be read and played individually or as part of the larger series, where you can use skills and items gained from one book in another book.

I was really astonished to find these finest gamebooks on the freeware internet web-site. And it's legal! God bless Joe Dever! Not only the text, but also the illustrations from the original paperback gamebooks enhance the joy of play. The illustrations are great but the graphic presentation could be better. Most of the gamebooks are on-line interactive gamebooks, only few of them are available in pdf formate.

  • Ring of Thieves written by S. John Ross

You control the destiny of Lucas Marks, young Halfling rogue, mercenary, and partner in crime with Patricia Meadows, a 22-year old human adventuress. On a frosty night in the city-state of Hultog, a magic ring was stolen. Now it's yours, but your partner has been taken in exchange. Can you save her? Can you survive the dangers of the Ring of Thieves? The adventure begins in the morning following a rather wild night. And Patricia is gone!

A very nice, short and rather straightforward adventure presented in a perfect-suited pdf format. The graphical presentation is excellent. An outstanding example of plain text gamebook. The story keeps a fast pace and reasonably low difficulty. To tell the truth, I don't like difficult adventures where you die so many times that it's no more fun to start playing again. The rules are very interesting and novel, pointing out another option of special abilities even for other gamebook writers. The only reason not to give this adventure the full count is my obsession with the online interactive gamebooks.

  • Lair of the Troglodites written by Andrew Wright

The last dictate of ratbrained tyrant, Chief Vurg, an old yet ruthless Trogwas, was to send the three greatest heroes (some would say Vurg's three greatest rivals) on an expedition to explore the nether reaches of the crypt in a bid to recover the Golden Spear, a potent magical artefact lost many years ago, that Vurg claimed to have seen in a holy vision. These heroes, Bosha the Bad, Gazoul, and Kursh Notch Ear, failed miserably, with only the now insane Gazoul returning, screaming about flaming eyes and magical rings. He disappeared shortly after, presumed drowned in the Well. YOU are Skuznut, the fourth greatest hero of the Clan of Akhuz, and your mission is simply to survive a day in the life of a failed.

  • Midnight Deep written by Hugh Eldred-Grigg

When your parents died caught in a field during a lightning storm and slain by a thunderbolt, an old man by the name of Tybald, claiming to be your father's friend, offered to adopt you. You went to live with Tybald in his shack in the foothills of the Ulakbad mountains. Tybald did not just raise you, he taught you - instructing you in the arts of swordsmanship, bladecraft and weaponsmithing. When you asked Tybald why he was training you, or where he learnt such skills, he would simply order more drills for you.

You have lived with Tybald for ten summers now, and you will soon be ready to go out into the world alone. Although Tybald has not addressed the issue, you can tell that the purpose he has been grooming you for is approaching. One day you spend several hours gathering the firewood. As you reach the valley in which the small cottage lies, you see a column of smoke rising from over the trees. Wondering what could have happened to your mentor, you drop the wood and race for the cottage...

  • Tower of the Nightlord written by Campbell Pentney

The twelfth night of Moorshadowing was indeed a grim night. A full moon entwined by dark clouds forbade a grim omen, and wolves howling at the sky gave testament that the night was filled with a darkness far greater than midnight's shadow. Far to the north, on the edges of civilisation in the Black Mountains lurked a tower, built upon dungeons where hundreds of poor souls had died - captured and tortured to death by the grim Nightlord.

You are an apprentice of the warrior-mage school of Kyrexia. This wizard's guild - tucked away in the shadow of small town of Verdinca is a powerful organisation indeed. However at this very day all the wizard's have left for the Soltice Ceremonies in Vay-Port, far to the west. Only you and several others have been left behind to take care of the building. Are you able to stop the incursion of the foul enemies to Verdinca?
